Cultural Expectations Self-Censorship - Contribution Made at the February 2008 College Art Association Annual Conference, Dallas, TX
The following story of self-censorship was submitted anonymously on 1/27/2009
Self censorship is a cultural influence for me as a Japanese female. However only realized this when I moved to the United States. I had never thought of myself as the typical quiet + obedient Asian woman until people in the U.S. expected me to be and somehow I started to be that way. Often times when I am opinionated or verbal, people do not hear or dismiss my response because this behavior is outside of what should be expected of me. (Japanese woman in US , 40)
