Censorship Awareness Week: A Model Student Action
During the week of January 12-15, 2009, students at Miami Carol City Senior High School, led by student organizer, Sarai Trinidad, conducted a Censorship Awareness Week. Using the ater, intrigue, and interactive workshops the y set out to educate the ir peers about First Amendment rights and censorship. Each day contained activities where students got engaged in and asked questions regarding the ir rights as a young people in America . On Monday posters were hung around the school with a question mark. At the end of the day the question mark posters were taken down to reveal the Censorship Awareness Week logo. Tuesday involved tons of volunteers who walked around the school in all black with "censorship bars" over their mouths. On Wednesday the morning announcements were cancelled and Sarai addressed the student body about what had happened the previous two days and talked about the importance of the First Amendment for students.
